Union vs. Non-Union 2 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 2
I am probably gonna catch some grief for this post, but oh well. I myself favor a man's right to work, earn a living, a enjoy his family. I see positives/negatives on both sides. And I know that more and more these days, you got to cover your rear because you have your best interest in mind.

What do you think, are you for Unions or Non-Unions?

Im for the unions. Unions have done alot of good for people that arent even in the trades. Weekends, 8 hour work days, and the amount of money people make in general. I dont see them being around forever though, right to work is gonna happen sooner or later. Which is sad, guys that make decent money are gonna have to compete with the Mexicans that are willing to work for 6 bucks and hour.

My wife was in union for nurses, what was aggravating is that other nurses who weren't union were getting the same wages as her. And they wrote the union and said thanks for getting them nice wages, but they were not in the union. Kind of crappy if you ask me.

Unions were a big part in building this country and still are. When I hear people bashing unions I think to my self how ignorant they are. I agree, weekends off, holiday pay, sick days ect. were all because people in unions took a stand to get them. The ignorant people don't know this or could care less. The decent wages non-union people make are a direct result of past unions. Study some history in labor and you will see that if it weren't for people standing up, you might be working in a sweat shop like in other countries making squat for your time. If you do a little research, those that bash unions might think twice before running their mouths against unions!

Unions had their time and place. They are now costing us more than they are doing us good. I have been union (all be it a crappy union, with gutless workers.) and non union. If you think they are not, ask yourself why a truck costs $30K, that 25 years ago was $15K, and the quality is no better.

We still do need some unions though. Electrical workers, carpenters, machinists, or skilled labor/trades etc. in general need unions.

However, the 18 year old kid, that's too stupid to come in out of the rain, who's daddy got him a job at GM, does NOT deserve to be making $30 an hour putting in 4 seat bolts.

There was also a time when an education or skill made a difference. Now, the 18 year old mentioned above, makes more than anyone in the engineering department. He also makes the same as the skilled laborers in the same plant. That's not right either.

Later,

Steve

I have to agree that as a degreed Mechanical Engineer working in Aerospace, it is somewhat annoying that the Union assembly line workers (my neighbors) across town at the Chrysler plant make considerably more $$ than I do. . .. although I do have to admit that I generally don't put in much overtime (though if I do, I don't get paid for it) . .. at the same time, I am happy with my salary in general.

Keep in mind that the system has to be able to bear the cost. .. and currently, with the move to an International economy, some Unions are bargaining themselves out of a job either by pushing their company's hand relocate or by dragging it down. .. remember that there can be NO benefits for anybody who worked at a company that's now bankrupt.

Maybe I'll have a different mindset once my wife graduates and has to join the Teacher's Union. ..
